Alex Astley

For Secretary of State

Astley is never gonna give you up!

Who is Alex Astley?

Alex Astley

My name is Alex Astley, and I think freedom is kind of a big deal.

I've been a Colorado resident since 2011, and I've lived in the northeastern plains since 2014. I'm a nerd. I have a tiny dog. I'm blind in one eye. I'm a registered Professional Engineer at a not-for-profit electric cooperative.

I'm a stubborn believer in both the individual rights and responsibilities of autonomy – namely the right to self-defense with the responsibility to not seek to cause harm, the right to free speech with the responsibility to speak honestly, the right to individual privacy with the responsibility to act honorably, and the right to earn a living with the responsibility to not harm others in that pursuit.

More important than all else, I'm a Christian saved by the grace of Jesus in April 2024.

Government in General

Governments have too much power over people, and I've never liked that. My voting history would reflect a frontier spirit, but as a long-time unaffiliated voter I didn't have much to do with government until recently.

I watched political activity from the sidelines, growing increasingly frustrated at political parties which seem to be little more than clubs that want to enrich themselves, build their clubs, legislate morality, and punish anyone they see as an enemy. I'd much rather see a smaller government seek to perform basic services, punish those who hurt others, and otherwise just stay out of the way of people.

In 2026, it's finally gotten to the point that I couldn't bear to sit on the sidelines any longer.

Why Libertarian? Why Alex?

Why Vote Libertarian?

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” — Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

All people should be free in the greatest possible sense of the word. Any follower of God should feel comfortable recognizing that He stands far above all of us, and we should not allow anyone but Him to rule our lives. Anyone in government should be our peer, enforcing the law in a way that ensures our freedom is not trampled by those who seek to do wrong.

But even if you don't know Jesus, freedom just makes sense. According to Merriam-Webster, libertarianism is "a political philosophy emphasizing the individual's right to liberty and especially to freedom as it pertains to property, labor, and earnings."

If you think you're capable of making better decisions for your own life than a collection of people in Denver or Washington DC, you already think like a libertarian — whether or not you wear the label.

Why Alex?

When Alex attended the Libertarian Party of Colorado convention, he was disappointed to see only about 100 people there out of the over 35,000 registered libertarians in the state. These few delegates were making major decisions for the third largest political party in Colorado. Alex thinks more than 100 people should have a say in government.

He heard party members ask people to run for office — any office — so the libertarian party name could be noticed. At one point, someone promised those candidates wouldn't actually win, so there was nothing to worry about. Alex didn't like that.

This candidacy isn't about getting attention, belonging to a social club, or getting revenge on anyone. Freedom and personal autonomy are more important than all of that. Alex is running to further individual liberty by any means necessary.

With Alex, what you see is what you get. He won't give you up, and he won't let you down. Do you know why other candidates want your vote?

Cast Your Ballot for Alex

1

Primary Election — June 30, 2026

As there is more than one Libertarian candidate for Secretary of State, there will be a primary election. Only Colorado voters registered with the Libertarian Party by June 8, 2026 are eligible to vote in the primary.

2

General Election — November 3, 2026

All registered Colorado voters can cast a ballot in the general election. Alex will only appear on the general ballot if he receives a majority of libertarian votes in the June 30 primary — so your primary vote is essential.

Registering to vote is free. Changing your party affiliation is free. Every valid ballot should be counted once — and yours matters.

What Does the Secretary of State Do?

In Colorado, the Secretary of State has three core responsibilities. All three are ripe for improvement.

Elections

  • Simple for voters. Thorough for administrators.
  • Every valid ballot counted once.
  • Fraud identified, excluded, and prosecuted.
  • Independent audits after every election — results made public.

People have a right to privacy. Governments do not. Election processes should be fully transparent.

Document State Records

There are tens of thousands of pages of state regulations, with even more commentary, historic copies, and notes. AI models should be trained on state statutes and regulations so Colorado citizens can ask questions and find relevant answers.

AI should never interpret answers for people — only direct them. Other agencies should also identify and remove redundant, conflicting, and unnecessary regulations. If a law can't be understood by a regular person, it needs to be either rewritten or repealed. Bringing light to these laws will help to clean them up.

Regulate Business

Two kinds of regulations should exist: ones that help honest people do business, and ones that punish bad actors.

Real people should be available to help business owners follow the rules. Minor paperwork errors shouldn't default to fines.
